Arecibo Fetes its founder Bill Gordon and his wife Liz, shown here with a cake model of the observatory
Bill Gordon's 90th birthday celebration in Arecibo was a grand event. The event occurred on his exact 90th birthday... easy to remember because he was born on 1/8/18. Many of his students came back for the festivities, and his former student Lewis Duncan, who is now President of Rollins University, gave the keynote speech. Umbe and I represented Rice and had a wonderful time! Images below: Lewis Duncan giving his talk; Lewis, Bill's first graduate student Herb Carlson (who was his first post-doc here at Rice), Liz and Bill; Lewis and Rich Behnke. (I have larger versions of these images if desired).

I'm trying to update our records with everyone's new emails, so please let me know if yours has changed. (And of course come and visit us when you're in town!) The William F. and Frieda Marlar Foundation has renewed its gift to the Rice Space Institute, with a $10,000 check. This gift ensures that the "Marlar Lecturer" and "Marlar Award" will continue for 2008-2009. The Marlar speaker for 2008 was Ed Stone of JPL. Matt Baring chairs the Marlar Committee which oversees the speaker and the award selection.
